Austin Comedy Shows Worth Seeing: The Live Experience You Haven't Heard Of Yet

Austin comedy shows get an upgrade with SideHustle LIVE — the entrepreneur comedy game show where founders pitch to comedians. Unlike anything else in Austin.

Austin's Comedy Scene Goes Way Beyond Sixth Street

Short answer: if you want a comedy show in Austin that isn't stand-up, isn't improv, and isn't a corporate mixer wearing a name tag, SideHustle® LIVE is the one to book. It's a comedy game show built by Side Hustle Games where teams pitch fictional "side hustle" businesses and the room scores every pitch on Funny and Fundable — part pitch competition, part live comedy, played entirely for laughs.

Austin has always punched above its weight in comedy. From Cap City Comedy Club's legendary alumni to the Velveeta Room's raw open mics, this city breeds funny. But SideHustle LIVE is carving out its own lane by mashing the energy of live stand-up with the drama of a pitch competition. Teams pitch gloriously fake businesses and get scored by the whole room, not just a panel — the result is something you genuinely can't see anywhere else in the city. For the full breakdown of the format, see the complete guide to comedy game shows for entrepreneurs, and for a section-by-section rundown of the show itself, see what SideHustle LIVE is.

What a SideHustle LIVE Show Actually Looks Like

Picture cabaret-style tables at Pershing Hall, teams of four or five huddled over a prompt card, and a room full of founders and business-minded regulars deciding in real time whether a pitch is brilliant or insane — while laughing hard enough to spill their drinks.

A show runs 60 to 90 minutes across roughly four rounds: teams get a prompt, brainstorm fast, pitch to the room, and get scored on two axes — Funny (does the room laugh) and Fundable (would the room actually back it) — before rotating into the next round. The final round raises the stakes for whoever's leading. Co-hosts Darby Rollins and Tomer Soran created the format together and have hosted every show since it started.

The pitches themselves are invented on the spot — nobody is presenting their actual company or real funding numbers. That's the whole game: watching people build something absurd out of nothing, under pressure, in front of a room that gets to call it.

Who's Actually on Stage — and Who Isn't

One thing that trips up first-timers: this isn't audience-participation comedy where you get dragged up and put on the spot. Participation at SideHustle LIVE is entirely voluntary. The teams pitching are founders who opted in ahead of time, working alongside professional improv comedians who help carry the scenes. Everyone else — the majority of the room — plays the game from their seat, scoring pitches and reacting like they would at any great comedy show. If you've ever avoided a "comedy night" because you were worried about being called out, this format was built to remove that fear entirely. For a closer look at exactly how that opt-in structure works, see do you have to get on stage at SideHustle LIVE.

That structure is also why the room feels different from a typical open mic. It's a concentrated crowd of founders and business decision-makers, sitting at tables instead of rows, with a real stake in who wins — closer to watching a sport you understand than watching strangers tell jokes.

When and Where to Catch a Show

SideHustle LIVE runs primarily out of Pershing Hall, Austin's recurring 250-seat venue, though the format started elsewhere. The first paid show premiered September 19, 2025 at The Creek & The Cave, with the first filmed show following there October 22, 2025 during Austin Tech Week. From there the show moved to Pershing Hall, debuting there February 5, 2026.

The rest of the 2026 calendar spans well beyond Austin's usual comedy nights: a March 18, 2026 show at Pershing Hall timed to SXSW, a March 25, 2026 show in Asheville, and back at Pershing Hall for the September 25, 2026 seven-year brand anniversary show — marking seven years since SideHustle launched on Kickstarter in September 2019. The next show after that is the October 28, 2026 fall finale, also at Pershing Hall. For booking, corporate shows, or to apply to pitch, email team@playsidehustle.com.

Beyond Sixth Street: Austin's Broader Live Entertainment Scene

Austin's "Live Music Capital of the World" reputation is well-earned, but live music is just one layer of this city's performance culture — its stages host comedy, theater, variety shows, and increasingly, formats that defy traditional categories. Between Esther's Follies, The Creek and the Cave, Cap City Comedy Club, and dozens of independent venues, Austin's live entertainment options run deep. SideHustle LIVE adds something genuinely new to that mix: a show that's part comedy, part pitch competition, part game show, and entirely its own thing — built by a company (co-founded by Darby Rollins and Tomer Soran) that also runs a free online version of the game at playsidehustle.live, and a separate classroom format, SideHustle Labs, that teachers use with student teams.

FAQ

Is SideHustle LIVE a comedy show or a business event? Both, at once. Teams pitch invented (and sometimes ridiculous) business ideas, and the room scores each pitch as "Funny or Fundable" — so you get the laughs of stand-up with the stakes of a pitch competition.

Do I need to know anything about startups to enjoy the show? No. The comedy and audience scoring carry the show even if you've never pitched a business in your life — it's built for a general entertainment crowd, not just founders, though the room does tend to skew toward founders and business decision-makers.

How is this different from a typical Austin comedy club show? Traditional club sets are stand-up or improv. SideHustle LIVE layers a structured game-show format — team pitches, room-wide Funny/Fundable scoring, live rotation — on top of the comedy, so no two shows unfold the same way.
